You Don’t Have to Walk in Fear
Trusting God through the night, the day, and the things you cannot control.
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
nor of the arrow that flies by day,
nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
and ten thousand at your right hand;
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes,
and see the recompense of the wicked.October 18, 2026
There is so much to fear right now. Yet I hope God will encourage you today: you don’t have to walk in fear.
Whether it is day or night, God is present. You can turn to Him with whatever is troubling you. The things that keep you awake, the concerns you carry through the day, and the uncertainty about tomorrow are not hidden from Him.
Verses 5 and 6 of Psalm 91 speak of the night, the day, the darkness, and noonday. Together, they cover the whole day. There is no hour when God stops being faithful. There is no season of life when you are beyond His care.
Why can we trust Him?
Because of His character.
God is faithful. He is trustworthy. He is righteous. He keeps His word.
Our circumstances change. Our feelings change. What seemed manageable yesterday may feel overwhelming today. But God’s character does not change with our circumstances.
Psalm 91 invites us to make God our refuge. A refuge is a place we turn to for shelter and protection. We do not have to wait until we feel strong enough to come to Him. We can come while we are afraid.
This does not mean that trusting God guarantees a life without sickness, loss, or hardship. In this same psalm, God says:
“I will be with him in trouble.”
Psalm 91:15 · World English Bible
God’s presence is not limited to the moments when everything is going well. He is with us in trouble, too.
You may be facing something painful. You may have questions that have not been answered. You may be praying for someone you love and wondering what will happen next. Faith does not require you to pretend those concerns are small. It invites you to bring them to a faithful God.
Jesus Invites Us to Trust
Jesus spoke directly to people who were afraid.
“Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.”
Luke 12:32 · World English Bible
Notice how tenderly He speaks: “little flock.” His words remind us that we belong to a Father who cares for us.
When a storm frightened His disciples, Jesus asked:
He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”
Mark 4:40 · World English Bible
The disciples could see the waves. They could feel the wind. The danger was real. But Jesus was with them.
We can become so focused on what is happening around us that we forget who is with us. We begin to think everything depends on our ability to control the situation, find the answer, or hold everything together.
We cannot do everything on our own. We were never meant to.
Feeling afraid does not mean you cannot trust God. You can acknowledge your fear and still turn to Him. You can pray through tears. You can ask for help. You can take the next wise step while depending on His strength.
Let God’s Word Guide Your Response
Think about the example Jesus gave us when He was tempted in the wilderness. He answered the enemy with Scripture. He knew God’s Word and remained faithful to it.
Matthew 4:1–11 describes temptation, rather than specifically saying Jesus was afraid. But it shows us how firmly He trusted His Father.
It also gives us an important reminder: the enemy quoted words from Psalm 91 while urging Jesus to throw Himself from the temple. Jesus refused to put God to the test.
Trusting God does not mean taking unnecessary risks or demanding that He prove His protection. We can trust Him while acting wisely, seeking help, and taking appropriate precautions.
Read God’s Word. Speak it. Meditate on it. Let it remind you of who God is when fear begins telling you that you are alone.
We do not repeat Scripture to force a particular outcome. We return to Scripture because it helps us know God, remember His faithfulness, and respond with faith.
Be Real with God
Talk to Him. Give Him your fears and doubts. Cry out to Him.
He can handle your honesty.
You do not have to clean up your feelings before you pray. You do not have to hide the thought that keeps returning or the worry you cannot seem to release.
Tell Him what frightens you. Tell Him where you feel helpless. Ask Him for comfort, wisdom, and strength.
Then surrender those concerns to Jesus. Surrender may happen through one heartfelt prayer, or it may mean bringing the same concern back to Him throughout the day. If the fear returns, you can turn to Him again.
God loves you. You can come to Him honestly and trust Him to hear you.
You may not know what tomorrow holds. You may not be able to change what is happening today. But you can ask God to help you face it.
His faithfulness is not measured by how calm you feel. He remains faithful while you learn to trust Him.

Practical Application
Take a few quiet moments this week to name what you are afraid of.
Is it your health? Someone you love? Your finances? A decision? Something you cannot control?
Bring that concern honestly to God. Ask Him to show you what you can do today and what you need to entrust to Him.
Choose one practical step. Make the appointment. Ask for support. Have the conversation. Seek wise counsel. Then release the expectation that you must manage every possible outcome.
When worry returns, remember God’s words in Psalm 91:15: “I will be with him in trouble.”
You can turn to Him again.
Prayer
Father, thank You for being faithful through the night, through the day, and through every season of my life.
You know what frightens me. You know the concerns I carry and the things I cannot control. Help me bring them honestly to You.
Teach me to trust Your character when my circumstances are uncertain. Remind me that I do not have to face trouble alone. Give me wisdom to act responsibly, courage to ask for help, and strength to take the next step.
Help me surrender what I cannot control. When fear returns, draw my attention back to Your Word and Your faithful care.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Declaration
I can bring my fears honestly to God. He is faithful, and I can trust Him in every season. I will seek His wisdom, take the next step, and entrust what I cannot control to Him.
